What is a blended family?
A blended family is when a couple decides to be in a committed relationship with each other, and either one or both partners have children from a previous relationship.
Some people might still use the term stepfamily, which has a negative connotation to it.
The term blended family allows every family member to feel included and part of the new family unit.
The struggle is real when blending families.
Establishing and maintaining a blended family has its fair share of obstacles.
The parents are excited to start their lives together; however, the children might not feel the same way. Some children might be confused and uncertain about how things are going to change for them as well as their family.
They might start to worry about losing time with their biological parent, because now the parent will have a new spouse.
In addition to having another adult in the house telling them what to do, there maybe new siblings added to the mix as well.
The children resist the change, the parents get frustrated, and there’s no sight of unity anytime soon.
Moving forward as a new team
Prior to blending families, each family had their own rules, routines, and responsibilities.
Now that two families are blending together, this gives them an opportunity to establish a new dynamic that best suits them.
